Spur-winged Plover

Spur-winged Plover

Common Name: Spur-winged Plover
Scientific Name: Vanellus spinosus
Exhibit: Aviary
Medium: Pencil
Date finished: May 12, 2006
Observation: This is the first bird that I drew in the aviary. Since the birds are more timid of humans and live much longer than just a few weeks (Which I am emencely glad for), they are harder to view good enough to draw. Most of my other bird pictures I draw while looking at various other pictures or closely viewing caged birds. The aviary on the other hand is a free-flight aviary where the birds can fly to wherever they want except out the doors. This Plover that I drew was one that was yelling at the birdkeeper who was going around cleaning the aviary. The birds usually only react to the birdkeepers and occationally to visitors who are wearing a shirt that is a certain color of blue since the zoo staff usually wear blue shirts. Since I was wearing a red shirt, it was alot easier for me to aproach the Plover as he paid attention to the birdkeeper. Though since I didn't have too much time left, I decided to color just in pencil instead of colored pencil. Luckly the bird is not very colorful. The most off colored part would probably be the wings which are more of a brownish grey.
