Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet Macaw

Common Name: Scarlet Macaw
Scientific Name: Ara macao
Exhibit: Aviary
Medium: Colored Pencil
Date finished: July 22, 2006
Observation: The two Scarlet Macaws probably get the most attention from visitors since they are one of the first birds people see when the exit the Butterfly Garden or enter from the aviary's southern entrance. Unlike the other birds, the Macaws are restricted to a certain area probably for both their and the public's safety. Their enclosure is pretty much just a clear box with no top since they can't fly. I had watched them for a bit as I decided what pose to draw. Around that time I noticed that they were stretching quite a bit, so that is the pose I used. Though unlike the real birds I copied, my drawing includes the full flight feathers while the real Macaws have clipped wings.
