Ruby-spotted Swallowtail

Female Ruby-spotted Swallowtail

Common Name: Ruby-spotted Swallowtail
Scientific Name: Papilio anchisiades
Exhibit: Butterfly Garden
Medium: Colored Pencil
Date finished: April 7, 2006
Observation: This Ruby-spotted Swallowtail that I drew is a female. You are able to tell what gender these ones are by the light patches on their wings. The males do not have the light patches or the patches are not very noticable. This butterfly gave me alot of trouble with my red colored pencil. The pencil tip kept on breaking while I was sharpening it. I had been using a very old sharpener that had never been sharpened itself. After that I got some new sharpeners to use and they worked much better.
