Red-skirted Cracker

Red-skirted Cracker

Common Name: Red-skirted Cracker
Scientific Name: Hamadryas amphinome
Exhibit: Butterfly Garden
Medium: Colored Pencil
Date finished: July 16, 2011
Observation: The Red-skirted Cracker is the most beautiful of the Cracker butterlies that I have seen. The blue on the inside of the wings is the most noticeable, so it is fun to tell people that the blue butterfly is named after the color red. Then I explain that they are red on the other side. I specifically drew this picture to show both of the colors. The blue for the beauty, and the red for the name. The challenge with this picture was the angle of the red wing. Since it wasn't viewed straight on, I had to figure out how the veins would look. The line sketch of that wing was much more difficult that the coloring.
