Lilac-breasted Roller

Lilac-breasted Roller

Common Name: Lilac-breasted Roller
Scientific Name: Coracias caudata
Exhibit: Aviary
Medium: Colored Pencil

Date finished: October 27, 2007
Observation: This bird is a favorite among young girls who come through the aviary. The hard part is actually finding her. It took me maybe about two months to actually finish this picture. I pretty much had to follow her around and deal with the distance and bad angles that she gave me. Luckily she had stayed fairly close during most of the coloring part. Though it took me pretty much two weeks (Actually three since I alternate between the aviary and Butterfly Garden) to do her tail alone. The day I did most of the coloring she had decided to fly too far away for me to see the details. Then she had eluded me for pretty much the whole four hours that I was there. Finally, she came down enough for me to see the detail. Though this time the lighting was not the best due to rain. I tried to get her tail as accurate as possible considering what I had to deal with. Since we only have one Lilac-breasted Roller in the aviary, it is pretty easy to tell who she is. I have also given her a name, but like the rest that I named, it is unofficial. I named her Skater Lily.
