Female Swallow Tanager

Sophia the Swallow Tanager

Common Name: Swallow Tanager
Scientific Name: Tersina viridis
Exhibit: Butterfly Garden
Medium: Pencil
Date finished: September 2005
Observation: This is the female Swallow Tanager and Tanteal's mate. I named her Sophia because it was a name simular to the color Sapphire. Unlike the male she has no black mask and her blue feathers actually show more of the green coloration that the male shows in a picture using the flash. She is like Nan in that she prefers the hidden branches to sit on. I wanted to catch her in a nice pose, so I watched them alot and paid additional attention to them during preening time. I finally got the image in my mind on how I wanted her to look.
