Female Peruvian Sheartail

Female Peruvian Sheartail

Common Name: Peruvian Sheartail
Scientific Name: Thaumastura cora
Exhibit: Butterfly Garden
Medium: Colored Pencil
Date finished: March 1, 2008
Observation: This pretty girl was the smallest of the five Hummingbirds that we got at the zoo. She was not always easy to see due to her small size and dull colors. At times she looked just like a piece of the vegetation she was sitting in. But she grew to be my favorite of the five Hummingbirds. Sadly no one has seen her for some time, so she is presumed dead. I have heard nothing about her body being found, so there is a possibility that she had managed to get through one of the doors. I wished that she was just nesting, but even then I would expect someone to see her feed on the flowers. I miss her.
