Crimson Patch

Crimson Patch

Common Name: Crimson Patch
Scientific Name: Cholsyne janais
Exhibit: Butterfly Garden
Medium: Pencil
Date finished: September 16, 2005
Observation: These are not very common Butterflies in the garden. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw one of them. Like many of the butterflies, this one is mostly black with a little color. The 'Crimson' patches are actually an orange color. It also has little white spots that sorta reminds me of snow. Unlike this picture the real butterfly does not show this much detail to the passive observer. I had to look closely to see the hidden veins that I had decided to include into my picture. Ever since I came up with this technique on drawing butterflies I have not gone back to simply drawing the basics. The veins make the detail all the more attractive.
